Bang in the middle of Al Barsha is where you’ll find this “detective-themed” pub at the Grand Excelsior Hotel. Al Barsha has slowly become a hub for those looking for a cheap pint while watching the latest matches, and now the competition is fiercer than ever. The Sherlock-theme starts and ends with the name and the signage and it’s a typical pub. The smoky (which is worth noting if you’re a non-smoker) wood-clad space is decked out with stained glass windows, sports memorabilia and other knick-knacks, squishy leather booths, a pool table, brick wallpaper and even a faux fireplace. To quote the most famous fictional detective of all time, “it has long been an axiom of mine that the little things are the infinitely the most important”, and while we do appreciate the little touches (yes, even the faux fireplace…) on our visit it awkwardly quiet and lacks that warm atmosphere you’d expect.
