Female dolphins, also called cows, typically give birth to a single calf after a gestation period of around 10 to 12 months, depending on the species. The exact nature of a dolphin nursery can vary depending on the species of dolphin and the geographical location. Generally, it is a shallow and protected area, such as a lagoon, bay, or reef, which offers some degree of shelter and safety from predators. These areas also tend to have an abundant food supply to support both the nursing mothers and their young. After birth, the mother dolphin invests a considerable amount of time and effort in caring for her calf. The nursing period can last from several months to a couple of years, depending on the species. During this time, the calf relies on its mother's milk for sustenance and protection.
